In the Preferences dialog we can set the options of IcoFX. It has for tabs:
Transparency/Grid Tab
 Transparency/Grid Tab
On this tab we can set the following options:
- The background pattern of the images, how the transparent area of the icon
is shown. Transparency properties like the size of the grid, the color of the
grid. We can select custom colors also. In a preview area we can see the result.
- The properties of the grid, shown over the images, like the style and color.
- The background color of the preview window
Actions Tab

On this tab we can set the following options:
- What action to take if the palette is about to be changed. You can set to change
the palette, do not change the palette, or to show a dialog that will ask you what
action to perform each time the palette is about to change. To change palette is
recommended for 256 color images. For 2 or 16 color images it is recommended to keep
the original (Windows default) palette since if Windows is set to 16 colors then the
icon will be displayed using the default palette.
- What action to take if the pasted image is larger than he canvas. You can choose
to shrink the image, to crop the image, or to show the Import Image
dialog where you have more cropping options.

Options Tab
 Options Tab
On this tab we can set the following options:
- Option to compress Windows Vista (256x256) images using PNG compression.
Other image sizes will not be compressed to keep the compatibility with
Windows XP or lower.
- Option to smooth the edges of the brush. Also included on the Main Toolbar.
- Option to use the filter on alpha channel (transparency). Also included on the Main Toolbar.
- Option to keep the original aspect ratio when importing an image.
- Option to empty the clipboard on exit.
- Option to export the transparency information to images (bmp, gif, png, jp2)
- Option to preserve the transparency of the selection. When this option is
selected the selection will be transparent, the underlying image will
show trough. Also included on the Main Toolbar.
- Option to drag the selection between windows. For more information see Handling Selections.
- Option to show tips on startup.
- Option to apply dithering on palette based images. This will result in a better
image quality because it will simulate gradients by arranging the pixels of the image.
- Option to automatically zoom the images to best fit in the window. Also included on the Main Toolbar.
Association Tab
 Association Tab
Here we can associate Windows (*.ico) and Macintosh (*.icns) icon files to IcoFX.
When you double click an icon in explorer it will be opened with IcoFX. We can add
IcoFX to windows Explorer context menu. When you right click a file in the Explorer
on the appearing pop up menu the option "Open with IcoFX" will be available.
These check boxes are available only for administrators (users who can
write to the Windows registry). For more information see the Troubleshooting.
